PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starter capable of using a magnetic switch having a small capacity and reducing the noise at the time of cranking. SOLUTION: A pinion member 30 provided on a rotary shaft 2 of a starting motor 1 is moved to the side of a flywheel 32 via a shift lever 36 rocked by the magnetic switch 39. The pinion member 30 has a cylindrical shape and is spline-fitted to the outer periphery of an outer ring 12 of a one-way clutch 10 for preventing rotation of the outer ring 12. Further, the pinion member 30 is freely movable in the axial direction, and at the time of cranking, only the pinion member 30 is movable in the axial direction.
