PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet stacking device capable of securely separating sheets by a prescribed number to be stacked, and especially, securely separating the sheets by the prescribed number even if stacking the sheets at high processing speed. SOLUTION: Sheets R are stacked on a receiving plate 24, and when the number of the sheets R reaching the prescribed number is detected by a counter 32, a temporary holding plate 27 is lowered below the lower surface of a lower surface carrying vacuum conveyor 23. The sheet R in a prescribed place is forcedly pushed up by the temporary holding plate 27 to form a gap between the proceeding sheet and a succeeding sheet R (the first sheet of the next stack), and the temporary holding plate 27 is inserted into the gap. Therefore, the sheet R in the prescribed place is stacked on the receiving plate 24, while the succeeding sheet R is prevented from being stacked on the receiving plate 24, but received by the temporary holding plate 27.
