PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a turbofan engine equipped with a pulse detonation engine with thermodynamically improved cycle efficiency. SOLUTION: This turbofan engine 20 includes a fan 32, a circumferential array of a plurality of compressor/turbine units 38, a circumferential array of a plurality of combustors 41, and a turbine section 42. The turbine section 42 is disposed forward of the combustor section 40, along with the generally forward flow through the turbine section 42. The blade stages of the turbine section 42 are co-spooled with the fan on the shaft 34. Each of the plurality of combustors 41 is coupled to each of the compressor/turbine units 38 to receive air and deliver combustion gas to drive the turbine by part of expanded combustion gas.
