A gripper device for a tufting machine is provided to suppress the abrasion between a gripper and a tufting needle and between a knife and a counter knife element, by joining the gripper and the counter knife element, which are individually formed. A gripper device(2) for a tufting machine is used to manufacture a carpet having cut pile. The gripper device comprises a gripper(3) having at least one first gripper section with a gripper edge for picking up loops, and a counter knife element(4) for receiving the loops from the gripper element(3). The counter knife element has a cutting edge joined to a knife(6). The counter knife element supports the gripper. The gripper edge has a linear shape.
