The tongue has a body (1) with a locking area (3) for locking in a belt buckle, and a belt slot (2) for holding and deflecting a belt strap around a deflecting bar (4). A tappet (6) is arranged at the deflecting bar and is held in an initial position with a preset retaining force. The tappet is displaced around the bar in an operating position during exceedence of load threshold. The belt slot is wider in the operating position than in the initial position of the tappet. An independent claim is also included for a safety system with an inflatable belt and a locking tongue.
