PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup element capable of outputting only charges forming one part of a screen at a high speed from among charges obtained by image pickup. SOLUTION: When image pickup is performed, the charges acquired by the photoelectric conversion of a photodiode 12 are vertically transferred through a vertical transfer CCD 14, and moved to a charge extracting section 20. In the section 20, driving pulses VR, VC and VL are given to extracts the charges other than only the charges forming a previously decided region of the screen. After that, the charges transferred from the section 20 to a horizontal transfer CCD 16 are sequentially transferred densely through the CCD 16. Thus, a horizontal transfer time can be shortened.
