PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head in which appropriate and highly accurate depth adjustment can be performed independently of distance between shields of a MR head, and to provide a manufacturing method of the magnetic head. SOLUTION: A depth detecting element detecting depth length of a magnetic head element 25 consisting of a MR element and arranged adjacent to the magnetic head element 25, is constituted of: a first depth detecting element 31 having such structure that it is held between magnetic shield layers 40, 41; and a second depth detecting element 32 which is not held between these magnetic shield layers. In coarse adjustment of tape length, the second depth detecting element 32 is used and appropriate depth detection in which influence of magnetic shield layers is eliminated can be performed, and in fine adjustment of depth length, the first depth detecting element is used and highly accurate depth detection can be performed.
