<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and accurate magnetic encoder mounted in an AC servo motor, so designed that leakage flux, produced by a magnet of a motor, is not radiated to an encoder portion through a shaft. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetic encoder includes: a sensor magnet holding portion 6 that holds a sensor magnet 1; a concentric and cylindrical back yoke 2 with the sensor magnet holding portion 6 in the center; and a concentric disk-shaped magnetic shield portion 21 that provides shield and prevents magnetic flux (2) leaking from a magnet 53 of a motor 5 from leaking to the sensor magnet 1.
