PURPOSE:To easily obtain the porous silica glass body adequate for a catalyst carrier, etc., with high purity by subjecting the fine glass powder obtd. by a vapor reaction to a granulation treatment at need, then aerating the powder and subjecting the grains to cold isotropic compressing, then to high-temp. heating. CONSTITUTION:The fine glass powder obtd. by the vapor reaction is subjected to the granulation treatment at need and is aerated; thereafter, the grains are subjected to the cold isotropic compressing followed by high temp. heating. The excess fine glass powder is produced at the time of producing a base material for optical fibers by a VAD method or external deposition method and such fine glass powder is efficiently usable. The granulation treatment is executed in order to allow easy molding at the time of the cold isotropic compression molding and is executed by, for example, the following method: The fine glass powder is once mixed with water or liquid which does not attack the glass, then the water or liquid is evaporated and the resulted solid is ground by a mortar. |
