The machine for positioning a roll of material web incorporates a feeder (30) which propels the roll of fabric forward at the machine's speed, and a tension-release control which incorporates a loop cf fabric (48) between the feeder (30) and the exposed layer of material (34). The fabric loop (48) is formed by curving (4) a free-falling section (20') of web into a direction crosswise to the fall-direction. A sensor barrier (50,58) alters the length of the curve (48).
