Disclosed is a display device for a motor vehicle. Said display device is used for representing an image that can be seen by at least one passenger of the vehicle and comprises a light valve (26) as well as a lighting unit (21, 22, 23) for illuminating the entire surface of the light valve (26). According to the invention, the lighting unit (21, 22, 23) encompasses a laser and/or an LED with a beam expanding device (24). Also disclosed is a method for representing an image which can be seen by at least one passenger of the vehicle. In order to illuminate a light valve, several lasers and/or LEDs sequentially generate colored illuminations for different luminous colors, said colored illuminations being adapted to an image content of the light valve.
