Provided is a use of a polynucleotide comprising an expression cassette for the manufacture of a medicament for reducing scarring in the skin or decreasing keloids of a subject having a wound, wherein the expression cassette comprises a promoter operably linked to a polynucleotide encoding p21 WAF1/CipI. Further provided are corresponding pharmaceutical compositions comprising the expression cassette formulated for topical application.
