The backrest (2) has a framework (21) pivoting along a transverse pivoting axis (B), and a central part i.e. medallion (22), pivoting along another transverse pivoting axis (C) that is not aligned with the pivoting axis (B), where respective positions of the axes (B, C) are fixed with respect to a support of a seat of a motor vehicle. Rear faces of the framework and the central part are coplanar with a rear part (P1) of a floor pan situated behind the seat. The respective axes (B, C) of the framework and the central part are linked together by a rod mechanism. An independent claim is also included for a rear seat comprising a head rest associated with a folding backrest.
