514,535. Making dispersions. DEUTSCHE HYDRIERWERKE AKT.-GES. May 9,1938, No. 13816. Convention date, May 7, 1937. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] Primary aliphatic or carbocyclic mercaptans containing at least eight carbon atoms are condensed at a temperature below 100‹C. in the presence of an acid with oxo compounds, acetals or carboxylic acid esters of aldehyde hydrates. The resulting high molecular mercaptals and mercaptols both as produced and after the introduction of hydrophile groups are stated to be dispersing agents. In examples : (1) cetylmercaptan is condensed with paraformaldehyde ; (2) octylmercaptan is condensed with monochloracetal: the chlorine atom may be replaced by the sulphonic acid group ; (3) dodecylmercaptan is condensed with glucose: the product emulsifies organic liquids, fats, oils and waxes in water or aqueous solutions ; (4) octadecylmercaptan is condensed , with levulinic acid and with nitrobenzaldehyde. The chains of the aliphatic mercaptans may be interrupted by O, S, NR, CO, SO2, COO, CONR or SO 2NR (R' being hydrogen or a hydrocarbon residue) and the oxo compounds may contain substituents such as halogen and nitro, hydroxyl, amino, quaternaryammonium, ether, carboxyl, sulphonyl, sulphonic, mercapto and sulphide groups. The following components are specified:-2-decahydronaphthylmercaptan, 1-2-naphthylmercaptan, 1-menaphthylmercaptan, montanylmercaptan, tetrahydromenaphthylmercaptan, 9-mereaptomethyl-octohydroanthracene, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, glyoxal, acetone, palmitone, stearone, mesityloxide, acetylacetone, cyclohexanone, acetophenone, stearophenone, benzophenone, cinnamicaldehyde, methylal, ethylal, acetal,' ethylidenediacetate, aldol, acetonylcarbinol, acetoaceticester, benzoin, phenoxyacetone, o-benzoylbenzoic acid, p-tolylacetonylsulphone, benzaldehyde-m-sulphonic acid, dichloracetal, chloral, monochloracetone and w-chloracetophenone. Specification 492,938, [Group IV], is referred to. |
