<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber roll for improving the grinding efficiency of a grinding wheel while keeping itself superior in surface property and free of outer diameter shape abnormality after grinding work. <P>SOLUTION: This rubber roll manufacturing method sequentially comprises: (a) a step of preparing the rubber roll having a core shaft and an elastic layer cylindrically provided on the outer peripheral face of the core shaft and formed of a vulcanized rubber; (b) a step of rotating the rubber roll while using a chucking mechanism for gripping and fixing the outer peripheral faces at both ends of the core shaft; (c) a step of pushing a backup device against an elastic layer at its side opposite to the grinding wheel for suppressing the pushing deflection which occurs in a step (d) during grinding work; (d) the step of using the grinding wheel having a width greater than the length of the elastic layer for grinding the elastic layer at a higher forward travelling speed than in a step (f) while pushing the grinding wheel against the elastic layer; (e) a step of separating the backup device from the elastic layer; and (f) the step of grinding the elastic layer at a lower forward travelling speed than in the step (d) while pushing the grinding wheel against the elastic layer.
