PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a distance detector that can calculate an accurate parallax by correcting an error caused by an offset in parallelism between optical axes of two image pickup devices mounted on a vehicle with a smaller arithmetic quantity than that of a conventional distance detector so as to enhance accuracy of distance detection. SOLUTION: Parallaxesδd(t0),δd(t1) of a still object are detected at times t0, t1 and a running distance L of a vehicle from the time t0 to the time t1 is calculated. An error caused by an offset in parallelism between optical axes of cameras 1R, 1L is obtained as a parallax offset D(ϕ) on the basis of the detected parallaxesδd(t0),δd(t1) and the running distance L, and the parallax offset D(ϕ) corrects the detected parallaxδd.
