摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and inexpensively provide a biaxial birefringent material having high durability and appropriately compensating the retardation of a liquid crystal element without making a combination with other elements. <P>SOLUTION: A retardation compensating element comprises a biaxial birefringent material and is manufacture by oblique vapor deposition of an inorganic material on a substrate. The oblique vapor deposition is carried out by keeping a direction (polar angle) where a vapor deposition material flies within a predetermined range with respect to the normal direction of the substrate surface and by reciprocally rotating the substrate as vibrating in a direction parallel to the surface. The retardation compensation element is disposed in such a manner that, in accordance with an inclined alignment component in the vicinity of the surface where liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal device are aligned as inclined even when a black color is displayed, the direction of the slow axis in the front retardation of the inclined alignment component and the direction of the slow axis in the front retardation of the retardation compensation element are perpendicular to each other, and that the inclination direction of the index ellipsoid of the retardation compensation element with respect to the surface is in the direction opposite to the inclination direction of the inclined alignment component with respect to the surface. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
