PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk which excels in wear resistance and tribological property even if the film thickness of a protective layer is 3 nm or less, and avoids a high fly write fault etc. SOLUTION: A magnetic disk 10 for magnetic recording is provided with: a magnetic layer 4 for magnetic recording; a protective layer 5 which is formed on a magnetic layer 4 and protects the magnetic layer 4; and a lubricating layer 6 formed on the protective layer 5. The protective layer 5 substantially comprises carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, and its atomic weight ratio (N/C) is 0.25 to 0.15 when obtaining the atomic weight ratio (N/C) of the nitrogen and carbon from the intensity of N1s and C1s spectrum by setting a take-off angle of C1s photoelectron and N1s photoelectron to 7°to a detector by analysis of the angle-resolved depth direction of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
