PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance an SN ratio of a magneto-resistive head by reducing magnetic noise without reducing playback output of a CPP magneto-resistive head. SOLUTION: A film thickness of an upper cap layer 7 in an element upper part is made thicker than that in the vicinity of a floating surface, a film thickness of a magnetic domain control layer in the element upper part is made thicker than that in the vicinity of the floating surface, or a film thickness of an insulating layer 3 between a free layer and the magnetic domain control layer in the element upper part is made thinner than that in the vicinity of the floating surface, so that a magnetic field to be applied to the free layer 11 of a magneto-resistive film 1 from the magnetic domain control layer 2 in the element upper part is made higher than that of a region in the vicinity of the floating surface.
