PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for transmitting an uplink control channel in a wireless communication system are provided to reduce signaling overhead using resource allocated in a bandwidth request channel as a ranging channel. CONSTITUTION: A terminal generates a plurality of bandwidth request preambles(S100). The terminal maps the bandwidth request preambles in a bandwidth request channel(BRCH)(S110). The terminal transmits the BRCH(S120). The bandwidth request preambles are divided into a bandwidth request sequence for allocating uplink resources and a ranging sequence for uplink synchronizing. The terminal simultaneously performs bandwidth request and initial connection ranging request.
