PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head-mounted display device capable of improving the luminance of a virtual image to be viewed and forming a virtual image suppressive in luminance unevenness. SOLUTION: The head-mounted display device 100 includes: an emission mechanism 10 that has a light source 14 composed of a plurality of light emitting elements 22 and a flat panel display 11 for forming an image on a flat panel and that emits image display light showing an image; and an eyepiece optical system 13. The device 100 is configured such that image display light emitted from the emission mechanism 10 is guided to the eyes E of a viewer P via the eyepiece optical system 13, thereby a virtual image to be viewed is formed in front of a viewer P. In the device 100, the flat panel display 11 is disposed at an angle so that the normal direction B of the flat panel does not coincide with the direction A of the center of a visual field. In addition, the direction of light emitted from each light emitting element 22 coincides with the direction A of the center of the visual field.
