DIRECT CHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF MICROBIAL BIOMASS AND MICROBIAL OILS

A soap that is made from the saponification of a microalgal lipid that contains no more than 500 ppm of colour-generating impurities such as chlorophyll and carotenoids. The soap can also comprise fatty acid salt of saponified oils from animals or plants. The microalgal lipid can be from a strain of microalgae selected from Parachlorella, Prototheca and Clorella. Also disclosed is a method for making the soap comprising contacting an aqueous solution of the microalgal lipid with a base that saponifies the microalgal lipid.
