<p>A building system (10) comprising insulating formers (12) manufactured from an insulating material, for example polystyrene foam. Each former (12) has at least one internal wall defining a rebated portion (18) in which concrete can be cast, forming a reinforcing rib (20). The rebated portion (18) typically has a dove-tail profile to reduce the likelihood of the cast concrete rib (20) falling out. Each former (12) has locating formations or engagement means (22, 24) configured for complementary engagement with at least one other former (12), allowing the formers (12) to be arranged in register with one another. Also disclosed is a method of building which includes the steps of: shaping formers (12) from insulating material for example polystyrene foam, in such a way that the formers (12) each define a rebated portion (18) and engagement means (22, 24) configured for complementary engagement with at least one other former (12); casting reinforced concrete ribs (20) in the rebated portions (18); and arranging the formers (12) in abutment with one another.</p> |
