Provided herein is a self-adhesive underlayment and an apparatus for its manufacture. The apparatus is operative to remove portions of release sheets covering upper and lower adhesive membranes and compress resulting exposed adhesive surfaces of the membranes to upper and lower surfaces of a flexible heating element.

1. A self-adhesive heating roofing underlayment comprising:
a flexible electrical heating element including substantially planar body having top and bottom surfaces and first and second conductors extending parallel to first and second lateral edges of said flexible electrical heating element; a lower waterproof membrane having mid-portion of an upper surface adhesively attached to said bottom surface of said flexible heating element between said first and second conductors, wherein first and second lateral portions of said lower waterproof membrane extend beyond said first and second lateral edges of the flexible heating element defining a lower sealing flap; an upper waterproof membrane having a mid-portion of an bottom adhesively attached to said top surface of the flexible heating element between said first and second conductors, wherein third and fourth lateral portions of said upper waterproof membrane extend beyond said first and second lateral edges of said flexible heating element; first and second release sheets releaseably attached to an adhesive upper surfaces of said first and second lateral portions of said lower waterproof membrane; and third and forth release sheets releaseably attached to adhesive bottom surfaces of said third and fourth lateral portions of said upper waterproof membrane.
