Methods of treating pain associated with osteoarthritis of a joint in a mammal with a pharmaceutical composition comprising a spiro-oxindole compound of the formula (I) are disclosed. The methods provide excellent penetration of the spiro-oxindole compound into the synovial membrane of the affected joint to effectively reduce the severity of the pain and/or to alleviate the pain with minimal or negligible systemic exposure.
