A method of machining an article (10). The method comprises:
scanning the article (10) to determine an initial surface profile (14);
determining a cross sectional area (A) removed from the article (10) by a material removal tool (108) in a material removal pass under controlled conditions;
using the cross sectional area (A) to determine one or more material removal tool contact angles (¸) for at least one material removal pass by the material removal tool (108) under the controlled conditions required to conform the initial surface profile (14) to a nominal surface profile (16); and
machining the article (10) to conform the initial surface profile (14) to the nominal surface profile (16).
