PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tandem-type light emitting element which employs an inverted structure.SOLUTION: A light emitting element has a cathode, a first EL layer on the cathode, a second EL layer on the first EL layer, an anode on the second EL layer and an intermediate layer. The intermediate layer is provided between the first EL layer and the second EL layer, and the intermediate layer has a first layer, a second layer on the first layer and a third layer on the second layer. The first layer has a hole transport material and an electron acceptor; and the third layer has alkali metal or alkali earth metal; and the second layer has an electron transport material.
