574,298. Sliding sashes and shutters. SHARP, A. Jan. 27, 1944, No. 1566. [Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] In a sliding sash mechanism for windows, shutters and the like each sash or panel carries threaded eyes t engaging correspondingly threaded rods s, each carrying one member a of a one-way clutch, which member is free to rotate in one direction to allow the window to be freely raised, but which in the other direction engages a member b the movement of which is resisted by a frictional surface c which brakes the clutch sufficiently to support the weight of the sash while allowing it to be pulled down. In a modification brake bands or adjustable brake blocks may be used for applying the braking pressure to the clutch members. The eyes t may be fitted with lubricating cups and the sash may be partly counterbalanced by a weighted lever or springs. |
