The light source may be pulsed in order to improve the quality of video images produced by the systems.

An imaging system for analyzing a tissue substrate, comprising; a light source; a light transport body configured to project light from the light source to the tissue substrate and transmit light from the tissue substrate; an analysis section which is in optical communication with the light transport body and which includes a video imaging system that utilizes a plurality of sets of field lines integrated over staggered time intervals that overlap in an overlap period for odd and even field lines that will be integrated into a single image; and a controller which is in communication with the light source and video imaging system and which is configured to activate the light source to emit a synchronized light pulse having a duty cycle of lighting of about 50% to be on only during the overlap period of odd and even field lines that will be integrated into a single image of the video imaging system.
