The present invention provides ß-carboline compounds. The present invention also provides of method of preparing ß-carboline compound of formula and their use as potent anti-leishmanial agent. A series of ß-carboline-compounds were synthesized and tested in vitro against promastigotes of Leishmania donovani. The synthesized compounds show promising anti-leishmanial activity
