Comprising, in order from an object side: a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power; a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power; an aperture stop S; a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power; and a rear lens group GR; upon zooming from a wide-angle end state to a telephoto end state, at least the rear lens group GR being moved toward the object side, and a distance between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2, a distance between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3, and a distance between the third lens group G3 and the rear lens group GR being varied; upon focusing on from an infinitely distant object to a closely distant object, the third lens group G3 as a whole being moved in the direction of the optical axis; at least a portion of the rear lens group GR being moved as a vibration reduction lens group to have a component in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis; and the vibration reduction lens group having negative refractive power, thereby providing a variable magnification optical system capable of realizing excellent optical performance, an optical apparatus, and a method for manufacturing the variable magnification optical system. |
