Fibrous materials or films are washed with a washing agent containing a small proportion of a compound which produces a blue to violet fluorescence in daylight or ultraviolet light and which has the general formula <FORM:0655296/IV (c)/1> in which A is a benzene nucleus of which two vicinal carbon atoms form part of the unsaturated lactone ring, which nucleus contains as a substituent an amino group which may contain substituents, and which nucleus may contain additional substituents, and R and R1 represent hydrogen or an alkyl or aralkyl radical which may contain substituents. In examples: (1) wool is washed in a solution containing 4 - methyl - 7 - dimethylamino - coumarin dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid and the sodium salt of m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid; (2) wool is washed in a bath containing the sodium salt of m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid and the product obtained by adding 4-methyl-7-ethyl-amino-coumarin to formaldehyde bisulphite; (3) cellulose acetate artificial silk is treated in a bath containing 4 - methyl - 7 - diethylamino - coumarin and the product obtained by condensing oleyl alcohol with ethylene oxide; (4) textile materials are washed with a soap containing the product obtained by reacting 4-methyl-7-amino-coumarin with formaldehyde bisulphite; (5) textile goods are washed with a soap containing 4 - methyl - 7 - ethylamino - coumarin; (6) textile goods are washed with a soap containing 3-benzyl-4-methyl-7-ethyl-amino-coumarin; (7) undyed textile goods are washed using a powder obtained by adding the sodium salt of m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid to 4-methyl-7-ethyl-amino-coumarin; (8) textile goods are washed with a soap preparation containing soap, 4 - methyl - 7 - ethylamino - coumarin and a - (benzimidazyl - 2) - b - (N - methyl - benzimidazyl-2)-ethylene; and (9) the benzimidazyl derivative of the previous example is replaced by a ,b - di - (N - methyl - benzimidazyl - 2) - ethylene or the di-imidazoles described in Specifications 600,696 and 611,510.ALSO:An optical bleaching and washing agent comprises a washing agent, e.g. a soap, a salt of a sulphonated benzimidazole containing a higher alkyl radical in the 2-position, a monocarboxylic acid ester of 4-sulphophthalic acid with a higher fatty alcohol, a fatty alcohol sulphonate or a condensation product of a higher fatty acid with an aliphatic oxy- or aminosulphonic acid, together with a small proportion of a blue or violet fluorescent compound having the general formula <FORM:0655296/III/1> in which A is a benzene nucleus of which two vicinal carbon atoms form part of the lactone ring, which nucleus contains a substituted or unsubstituted amino group and R and R1 are hydrogen or an alkyl or aralkyl radical. Examples are given of compositions comprising (1) m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid sodium salt and 4-methyl-7-dimethylamino-coumarin; (2) m -heptadecyl-N-benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid sodium salt and the condensation product of 4-methyl-7-ethylamino-coumarin and formaldehyde bisulphite; (3) the condensation product of oleyl alcohol and ethylene oxide, and 4-methyl-7-dimethylamino-coumarin; (4) soap and the condensation product of 4-methyl-7-amino-coumarin and formaldehyde bisulphite; (5) soap and 4-methyl-7-ethylamino-coumarin; (6) soap and 3 - benzyl - 4 - methyl - 7 - ethyl-amino - coumarin; (7) m - heptadecyl - N - benzyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid sodium salt and 4-methyl-7-ethylamino-coumarin; (8) a - (benzimidazyl - 2) - b - (N - methylbenzimidazyl-2)-ethylene, soap and 4-methyl-7-ethylamino-coumarin; and (9) as in (8) but using a ,b - di - (N - methylbenzimidazyl - 2)-ethylene or one or more of the di-imidazoles described in Specifications 600,696, [Group IV (c)], or 611,510. |
