A pultrusion process, for making a strip for an elongate reinforcing structure, eg a spar cap, of a wind turbine blade, comprises (a) drawing fibres and resin 42 through a pultrusion die 40 in a process direction to form a strip 102, and (b) applying, eg bonding, an infusion-promoting layer 110, eg of a loosely woven glass fibre material, to one or both surfaces of the strip 102 down-stream from the die 40. The infusion-promoting layer 110 may instead be uni-axial, multi-axial or fleece, and comprise carbon, glass, aramid, polyester or nylon fibres, or may be perforated or porous. The infusion-promoting layer 110 may be bonded by adhesive, eg epoxy, fig.6, to a strip 102 that has already been cured in curing oven 44. Alternatively, fig.7, the infusion-promoting layer 110 may be applied to the strip 102 at application station 150 when the strip is in an uncured or semi-cured state followed by curing in the oven 44. The infusion-promoting layer is integrated into the finished structure. |
