PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element that reduces a phenomenon that a user views light as shadow even in a normally black mode and is excellent in display quality.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element: is configured as a segment display type for displaying a predetermined design 50 on a display surface; has a passive drive system; and operates in a normally black mode. The liquid crystal display element includes: a liquid crystal layer 5; a first substrate 1F; a second substrate 1R; a reflection layer 40 for reflecting light incident from the liquid crystal layer 5 side; and a second polarizing filter 30 located between the second substrate 1R and the reflection layer 40. A thickness of the second substrate 1R substantially matches a width of a segment form having the thinnest width among the segment forms that constitute the design 50. A reflectance of the reflection layer 40 including the second polarizing filter 30 is set such that a value obtained by multiplying the width of the segment form having the thinnest width among the segment forms that constitute the design 50 by the reflectance of the reflection layer 40 including the second polarizing filter 30 becomes equal to or more than 20. |
