A bite detector 1100 for providing an alarm signal indicative of movement of the line of a fishing rod, the detector comprising a movement sensor 1102 for generating a movement signal indicative of movement detected by the sensor; an alarm module 1106 for processing the movement signal and generating the alarm signal if appropriate; and a signal discriminator module 1104 for activating the alarm module when the movement signal has met at least one criterion for a length of time, the length of time being selectable from a range of lengths of time during operation. There is also disclosed a bite detector comprising: a movement sensor (1002, fig 10) for detecting movements in the line; an amplitude to frequency converter (1004, fig 10) for converting the output of the movement sensor into a pulse train having a repetition frequency related to movement sensor output by a transfer function; a tone generator (1006, fig 10) for generating a series of audio tones whose timing corresponds to the pulse train output by the amplitude to frequency converter; a timing predictor module (1010, fig 10) for estimating the length of the current pulse, to allow data including the estimated pulse duration to be transmitted to a remote device so as to allow the series of audio tones to be reconstructed at the remove device. |
