<p>A measuring instrument, such as a coating thickness measuring instrument, comprises a reader 6 arranged to read information provided on another article 7,2,13. The reader can be an RPM reader and the information could be provided in an RFID tag 8 or barcode. The information may be provided on a calibration piece such as a calibration foil 7, on an article to be measured 13, or on a probe or other detachable component 2 of the instrument.
