An ion detector system for a mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a detector 8 comprising an array of sensor pixels, wherein a dimension of the sensor pixels is < 10 μm, and an aperture 3 arranged and adapted such that a beam of charged particles 10 or light passes through the aperture 3 in use, wherein the aperture 3 comprises a pinhole aperture or slit having a dimension comparable to, equal to, or less than the dimension of the sensor pixels. The device may be a streak camera device. It may feature a phosphor screen to change the charged particles into light. The particles may be raster scanned across the phosphor screen. Focussing devices may be used before and after the phosphor screen to firstly focus the charged particle beam and secondly focus the outputted light. A control system may be employed to control the focussing of the particle beam and to control the raster device so that the beam width on the phosphor screen is maintained at a size comparable with the pixel width. |
