<p>The device has a camera (1) transmitting image data of objects to an evaluation device to determine characteristics such as material composition, color and size, of the objects of a material stream. LEDs (4) e.g. red, green and blue LEDs and UV LEDs, are arranged in a row to illuminate the stream. The stream is transported by a conveyor element (3) and bypassed at a detection area of the camera. An optical device (6) is arranged between the LEDs and the area and causes diffusion of lights from the LEDs.
