Provided are a negative electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery, which comprises: a negative active material and a binder wherein the binder includes carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, and a styrene-butadiene rubber, wherein the carboxymethyl cellulose includes a repeating unit represented by chemical formula 1 and a repeating unit represented by chemical formula 2, in which the sum of the number of moles (n^1) of the repeating unit represented by the chemical formula 1 and the number of moles (n^2) of the repeating unit represented by the chemical formula 2 is greater than or equal to 1500, and a loading level, which is a weight per unit area, is greater than or equal to 12 mg/cm^2; and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same.
