PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for bringing an organic substance into lower molecular weight in which an organic substance can be efficiently made lower molecular weight to obtain a high-quality and high-calory modified product, and an amount of gas containing carbon monoxide which is introduced from outside a system for shift reaction use can be made smaller.SOLUTION: A method in which excessive steam is added to carbon monoxide-containing gas (g) to cause shift reaction, and produce mixed gas (g) containing hydrogen created by the shift reaction, carbon dioxide gas and steam that was not consumed in the shift reaction, the mixed gas (g) is brought into contact with an organic substance, and the organic substance is modified into lower molecular weight. Steam is added to a part of a gas product created by the lower molecular weight of the organic substance to cause steam modification reaction (A), by which carbon monoxide-containing gas (g) is created, and the gas (g) is used as carbon monoxide-containing gas (g) for shift reaction use. |
