Provided herein is a method for identifying a compound having neuroprotective activity, including: providing a population of cells treated with a test compound for a first period of time; subjecting the population of cells to doxorubicin for a second period of time; and determining survival rate of the population of cells; wherein an increase in the survival rate compared to a control that is not treated with the test compound is indicative of neuroprotective activity of the test compound. Compounds identified therefrom are also provided. These compounds can be used to treat various diseases, disorders, or conditions associated with neuronal cell death.
