A system 30 comprises a component 32 that is dosed to include a chemical marker 44 which releases gas at or above a known temperature. An operating environment 36 in which the component is installed includes a chemical sensor 42 arranged to measure the chemical composition of the operating environment. A processor 54 receives measurements from the chemical sensor and determines the temperature of the component from the composition and concentration of the chemical marker 44 measured by the chemical sensor. The component may be part of a transformer, generator or motor, a magnet in a permanent magnet machine, a capacitor, a wire or a power switching module. Alternatively it may be a bearing housing, drive shaft or other moving component, a cover, support, patch, tape or coating. The chemical sensor may be a mass spectrometer. The chemical marker may be an organic compound which becomes volatile at a known temperature. The known temperature is below the temperature at which the system would fail. Preventative action may be taken on the basis of the chemical marker being sensed, such as cooling or shutting down the system or sounding an alarm. |
