Class 110(1) [Also in Group XXXV] A centrifugal pump is driven through a magnetic coupling comprising a ring of magnets 29 mounted on a rotor 26 to sweep around the periphery of a dome-shaped diaphragm 19 which separates the casing 16 containing the rotor 26 from the casing 18 containing the pump impeller 51, the latter having an axial sleeve 48 journalledsolely in a bearing 45 in the casing 18. The casings 16, 18 are carried by the driving motor 10, the shaft 12 of which carries the rotor 26. The diaphragm 19, which is preferably of stainless steel, extends between the flanges 22, 32 of the casings 16, 18 and has a cylindrical rim secured to the flange 22 by screws 25. A packing ring 33 is provided. A thrust bearing 55 is recesed into the impeller back plate 49 and bears against the diaphragm 19. A ring 57 of high electrical conductivity, dished to conform to the shape of the diaphragm 19, is riveted to the back plate 49 in opposition to the pole pieces 30 of the magnets 29. The back plate 49 is of iron or other ferromagnetic material. Ports 52 in the sleeve 48 admit the fluid to the impeller blades 50. The pump, which is suitable for pumping milk, is readily dismantled for cleaning, after removal of nuts 36 (which may be of the thumb type), by detaching the casing 18 and impeller 51, the diaphragm 19 being left in place on the casing 16. The inlet 40 and outlet 42 are preferably ribbed as at 44 for connection of hoses.
