550,236. Polymerization. GATES, W. E. F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, .Ltd.. June 27, 1941. No. 8089. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group V] Wire coils are positioned in a two-phase mixture of a liquid monomer or partial polymer and a solid polymer, the first phase comprising 20-50 per cent. by weight of the mixture, and the monomer is thereafter polymerized. The material may be the monomers, mixed monomers, polymers, mixed polymers or inter-polymers of polymerizable esters of acrylic acid, alphasubstituted acrylic acid, vinyl acetate or styrene, e.g., a mixture of monomeric and polymeric methyl methacrylate. The mixture may be allowed to stand until it is of the desired consistency, e.g. doughlike. Polymerization catalysts, inhibitors, fillers and colouring agents may be added. Polymerization may be effected by heat, light and catalysts. The coil is embedded in the mixture, which is contained in a mould which can be closed and maintained under slight pressure during polymerization. In an example the solid constituent is deposited from a plasticized aqueous emulsion. In another example, the body of the mould is made of five pieces of thick plate glass and the top of the mould is another piece of plate glass which is clamped down on four flat paper coated rubber strips laid along the tops of the sides. The ends of the coil are brought out between the rubber sealing strips and the mould walls. Specifications 436,084, 464,688, [Group V], 484,343, 498,877, 533,357 and 540,383 are referred to.
|
