摘要 Apparatus and methods are disclosed for a virtual locomotion controller user interface and system that combines data obtained from various sensor devices to allow users to control the movements of their representation in a virtual world using sensorimotor responses closely resembling the tasks and actions they would physically perform in the real world. As a result, users can specify an avatar's locomotion style by assuming body postures normally associated with that type of movement, while controlling locomotion speed or displacement through foot forces and/or stepping motions and locomotion direction through foot and body orientation.

A user interface system, comprising: a body tracking unit configured to provide information about movement of a user including movement of a primary foot and a secondary foot; and a control unit configured to: receive the information from the body tracking unit, determine whether the movement of the primary foot of the user includes a first set of event sequences corresponding to at least a first lift event, a first plant event, and a second lift event that conform to a first set of time and distance constraints, and determine whether the movement of the secondary foot of the user includes a second set of event sequences corresponding to a first lift event and a first plant event that conform to a second set of time and distance constraints wherein the first set of time and distance constraints for the primary foot includes minimum and maximum timing and distance constraints, and the second set of time and distance constraints for the secondary foot includes maximum timing and distance constraints, and generate a control signal only in response to detection of said second lift event of the primary foot if the control unit determines that the movement of the primary foot includes said first set of event sequences that conform to the first set of time and distance constraints and any movement of the secondary foot conforms to the second set of time and distance constraints, wherein the control signal controls an avatar to make a step movement in a virtual world.
