PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon material, which provides a high carbonization yield and uses a precursor which is easy to be infusibilized and carbonized. ! SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing a carbon material comprising carbonizing an organic polymer having π bonds in the main chain. The organic polymer having π bonds in the main chain is preferably one having, as π bonds in the main chain, one or more of any of double bonds, triple bonds, and conjugated bonds in combination. Further, the method for producing the carbon material preferably comprises carbonizing the organic polymer having π bonds in the main chain after an infusibilizing treatment thereof. The organic polymer having π bonds in the main chain is preferably fibrous.
