The present invention relates to an aromatic compound having a structure having one alkoxy group on each of the phenyl groups of a tetraphenylbenzene structure, to a polymer, copolymer and block copolymer having within the molecular structure thereof an aromatic ring having a total of 4 hydroxyl groups that uses the aromatic compound, and also to a polymer electrolyte membrane which is highly thermally stable at high temperature obtained by producing a film comprising the polymer, copolymer or block copolymer and by making the film carry a high content of ionic electrolyte, and to a rechargeable battery and super-capacitor using the polymer electrolyte membrane.
