An organic electroluminescent device, comprising: an anode; a cathode; and at least one matrix layer, comprising at least one matrix material, wherein the matrix material comprises a compound of the formulas (2) or (4) wherein: X is O; and Y is C or S in formula (2), and S in formula (4); R is the same or different at each instance and is an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring system or an aryloxy group which has from 1 to 40 carbon atoms and is optionally substituted by one or more substituents selected from: R1, CN, B(R2)2 or Si(R2)3 radicals, and further wherein a plurality of substituents R together optionally forms an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring system; R1 is the same or different at each instance and is a straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy chain having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms, in which one or more nonadjacent carbon atoms is optionally replaced by —R2C═CR2—, —C≡C—, Si(R2)2, Ge(R2)2, Sn(R2)2, —NR2—, —O—, —S—, CO—O— or —O—CO—O—, where one or more hydrogen atoms may also be replaced by fluorine, an aryl, heteroaryl or aryloxy group which has from 1 to 40 carbon atoms and may also be substituted by one or more R2 radicals, or OH or N(R2)2; R2 is the same or different at each instance and is H or an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; with the proviso that the molar mass of the matrix material is greater than 150 g/mol; and further wherein said matrix layer includes at least one sublayer doped with at least one phosphorescent emitter adjacent to at least one undoped sublayer and wherein at least one of the R radicals includes a quaternary atom and at least one of the R radicals contains a 9,9′-spirobifluorene derivative, a 9,9-disubstituted fluorene derivative, a 6,6- and/or 12,12-di- or tetrasubstituted indenofluorene derivative, a triptycene derivative, a dihydrophenanthrene derivative, a hexaarylbenzene derivative or a tetraarylmethane derivative.
