The present invention obtains a protection device for a vehicle inverter that is capable of protecting an inverter element from overheating and preventing deterioration of drivability. A protection device for a vehicle inverter is provided with a maximum element temperature calculation unit for calculating a maximum element temperature from the element temperatures of an inverter and a unit for calculating an element-temperature-output-limit coefficient that calculates an output limit value corresponding to the maximum element temperature, sets the current output limit coefficient to the current output limit value if the current output limit value is smaller than the previous output limit coefficient, and sets the current output limit coefficient to the previous output limit coefficient with a prescribed value that has been determined beforehand added thereto if the current output limit value is greater than or equal to the previous output limit coefficient. |
