The invention comprises p-t-butyl-, o-nitro-and p-cyano-perbenzoic acids and a process for preparing perbenzoic acid which may be substituted by NO2, CN, F, Cl, Br, alkyl or a further CO.O2H. The process comprises contacting the appropriate benzoic acid or its alkyl ester with H2O2 in alkanesulphonic acid at 10-60 DEG C. In the examples, the unsubstituted and the p-t-butyl-, o- and p-nitro-and p-cyano-perbenzoic acids are prepared from the benzoic acids; diperterephthalic acid is prepared from terephthalic acid or its dimethyl ester. Methanesulphonic acid is preferably used in the process; ethanesulphonic acid is also mentioned. |
